Say no to Style Labels
I’m talking about personal labels, style labels, favourite music labels. I feel like we’re constantly living trying to define who we are by what we do, where we go and what people we surround ourselves with. This sounds totally wrong, and can be really stressful for yourself, too. This topic is really tricky cause you could object that if you “dress up” you can’t help being given a label, be it “weirdo” and not “goth” or “punk” or any other known style label.
Labels can be Wrong
Labels can be useful when we need to explain something to someone. For example, if someone asks me what’s my favourite style there’s no guilt in saying “minimal with a dark edge”. What’s wrong with labels is when you’re at a concert and you’re pointing at people calling them names: “Look at that slutty goth!”. Or “she’s a total nerd, such a loser”. “Bloody hipsters!”
Style labels are totally useless when you are a fashion savvy person, because I take that you like experimenting with a wide range of styles and you don’t like being defined with a single style label. You can mix grunge with preppy, you can wear a little black dress and punk it up. You know you’re playing with styles and you’re not trying to “live the life”.
So this should begin with every single one of us: stop labeling yourself and the other people will stop labeling you as well.
Labels can be Alluring
So why is a label so alluring? A label can be a status symbol, a self-determination, even self-conviction and social recognition. Think about the actual labels inside your clothes: they can say a lot about your status, money, and yourself. Think about the statement t-shirts that are the rage at the moment: those are totally labels you stick right on yourself for everyone to see.
If you’re curious, the t-shirts in the picture above are United Couture, Dolls Kill, Wildfox Couture and Kill City.
Labels are for Packages
Not people. Labels are meant to be there because we don’t know what’s inside a box, because a box doesn’t talk. We need labels for objects, but guess what? People have minds, they’re able to speak and they don’t need to be labeled to be known. Because that’s what we do: we’re scared of what we don’t know so we label everything. I’ll tell you something: the unknown is the most beautiful thing in the world, and I’m just starting to grab it now! Stop labeling and start talkingm, being open minded and being receptive to new and different ideas or opinions. Labels will fall off of everyone in a second.
You know I love and value your opinion so leave a comment and let us know what you think!
