How to Live Out of Your Bedroom
The title of this post might sound weird, but it’s not. You’re in your thirties, you have already moved several times in your life, but you still haven’t managed to get a whole place for yourself. On top of that, you work from home! Am I talking about you? If yes, you might find this post very useful.
Let me be honest, the description in the previous paragraph is also about me. I’m 27 years old, I have already moved six times, and none of these times I was able to get a place on my own, including the house I currently live in. House sharing is totally ok and very common today, don’t get me wrong. But sometimes having to sleep, work, receive your guests, do yoga, relax, read and watch a movie all in the same room can be awkward, not to mention annoying.
How to Live in a Bedroom?
There a few habits that will help you live in a bedroom and remain sane. You must trust me on this one, I am an expert by now.
- Make your bed asap. My morning routine looks like this: the alarm goes off, I jump out of bed, have breakfast, dress up and make my bed straight away. Only at this point I am allowed to do anything else in the room (ok, it was all true minus the “I jump out of bed” part!)
- Have different light sources. It’s very important to change your lighting depending on what you are doing. For example, have your room fully lit when you are working and dim the lights when you are unwinding in the evening or having friends over.
- Use a sofa bed. Or make your bed look more like a sofa than an actual bed. Remember, you’ll have to do much more than just sleeping on it because your bedroom is the only room you have available. I am currently using an extendible bed from Ikea (I know, not sustainable, but cheap!). You can see it in the photo below. It’s easy to make it look like a sofa, and it turns into a king size bed if necessary!
- Decor your walls. White empty walls have never looked appealing to anyone. Hang some carefully chosen art pieces or beautiful photography that match the overall theme of your room. Nothing screams “teenager” more than random posters on a wall. If your landlord isn’t happy with you drilling holes in every wall or sticking decals all over the place try with hanging art. You can move and replace your canvas with a new one with no much fuss.
- Keep your clothes hidden. Ok, I am not following my own advice because I have a clothes rack right next to my desk. But if you can, keep your clothes where they belong: in your wardrobe. Also, mind the scattered clothes, they are the worst thing to have around: remember that the outside mess quickly reflects on the inside. You don’t want a messy and unfocused mind, right?
- Try to keep your workspace separate from the rest. I know this is not easy, and again I’m not walking my talk. My desk is right in front of my bed, which is amazing for watching movies, but it doesn’t help with keeping work time and relax time separated! If your room is spacious enough you could get a nice room divider: it always adds a lot of style to a room.
- Get out of the house often. This is one of my favourite pieces of advice. Ideally, you should get out of the house at least once a day. Even if it’s just for grocery shopping! This change of view will help you love your room. Being segregated inside won’t do you (and your room) any good!
- Feng shui your room. I know very little about Feng Shui, but I like what I know. This Chinese practice is not easy at all, but you can get the hang of it with this article by Gala Darling (but please do not buy goldfish, they suffer in those tiny jars!)
- Hang your curtains high. This is a trick many interior designers use. Curtains should be hung as high as your ceiling allows, and they also should be hung wide (when they’re open the window should show entirely). This small trick gives the illusion of a bigger room: try it, it works!
