Alex Box: the Best Make-Up Artist

November 4, 2010

Alex Box
. Did you know she’s a woman? Well, she is! She’s a powerful and wonderful woman, you’d think she’s got brushes and not finders by watching her works.
She’s in fact a famous free lance makeup artist, you can see by yourself how talented she is.
She’s a fashion mua, that means she does makeup for catwalks, videos, campaigns and so on for the best designers.
I could list the thousands of places, designers, magazines which she worked for, so I’m just telling you some of the best: Gareth Pugh, McQ, Vogue, Numéro, Dazed&Confused.

Her most continuous work is sure the one with Illamasqua :

“An exciting new London-based brand, Illamasqua celebrated its first birthday in November 2009. And the success of make-up for your alter ego has been phenomenal. Self-expression through make-up is an idea that is spreading outside alternative cultures. Illamasqua’s mission is to provide high-performance, professional make-up to anyone who wants to self-express and accentuate their look beyond the norm.”

She is Illamasqua art director, being part of the art team which numbers also Anya Huwe and David  Vanian.

Alex talks about how she started:

“I WAS AN ARTIST WORKING PRIMARILY ON INSTALLATIONS USING THE BODY AS THE CENTER OF THE ART, AND MY FRIEND INTRODUCED ME TO A FASHION DESIGNER WHO USED DANCERS INSTEAD OF MODELS MUCH LIKE LEIGH BOWERY AND MICHAEL CLARK. I DESIGNED THE MAKEUP LOOK FOR THE SHOW AND THROUGH OTHER PEOPLE SEEING MY WORK IN THAT CONTEXT I BECAME A MAKEUP ARTIST. MY ART WORK IN THE FRAME OF FASHION BECAME ‘MAKE-UP’.”

(Read the whole interview here)

She’s famous for her “inhuman” make-ups, which makes the model look everything but “sexy”. She creates a whole new world, a dream (should I say nightmare?) with these Burton-esque figures.
No wonder she’s often called to arms in Gareth Pugh fashion shows, and that she works with Illamasqua, which is very goth inspired.
Let’s explore some of her favourite things:
COLOR
I collect color like a magpie feathers her nest: I’ve got well-thumbed Pantone books, swatches of fabric, ribbons, anything that catches my eye. It feeds my creativity and has an incredibly positive energy. When people see me in acid pink on a rainy London afternoon, they say, “Ooh, you’ve cheered me up!” “
“The Vintage Find: Beyond Retro
“Everything for me is vintage except for my shoes. I go everywhere for my vintage; sometimes you have to dig for it, and then suddenly it finds you. It’s a quest, like you’ve hunted for it. I go to Beyond Retro a lot—I’ve found Givenchy there for £10!” “
