5 Ways to Go Vegan and Stay Vegan
Did you know that over sixty percent of vegans stop being vegan within their lifetime? That could be for a lot of reasons; medical conditions, cravings, societal pressures. But what if I told you there were ways to make sure that when you go vegan you stay vegan? Things that you could do right now, weather you’re new to the lifestyle or a seasoned activist! It may take a little more work but it’s far from impossible.
1. Keep Your Health in Check
A major reason that many people drop their vegan diets is due to vitamin deficiencies and weight gain. The best think you can do when you first commit to a vegan lifestyle is to go to the doctor and get a blood test.
Firstly, understand that there are some vitamins and minerals that you will need to supplement. Omega 3-Fatty Acids are harder to consume through plant foods and B12 isn’t present in plant foods at all! To combat this you can opt for foods fortified with the vitamins you need or simply a vegan multivitamin. Lots of vegan burgers and soy milks are fortified with these vitamins and be sure to look into spirulina or nutritional yeast – you’ll never look back from its amazing cheesy flavour!
Don’t forget that the myth that vegans are always healthy and thin is just that, a myth. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a vegan, a raw foodist or a meat-eater, eating too much processed food or simply not enough variety can always lead to serious health problems. The best way to eat healthy is to eat clean! Know exactly what you’re putting into your body and focus on whole foods like fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
2. Keep it Fun
What with the last section on dietary requirements and health stuff, it may sound like veganism is all counting calories. That is far from true. Our second tip to staying vegan is to keep it fun.
Food is fun, cooking is creative and at the end of it all we get to eat something delicious! What more could you want? Opt to try new foods (no one wants to eat the same lettuce wrap every day of their life), create new recipes, create vegan versions of your favourite junk food, eat the foods that you love (is anyone else a hummus junkie?), and find a place for the occasional vegan junk food in your diet. Something as simple as trying a new cooking technique on the same ingredients can go a long way. If you keep it fun, why would you ever want to turn back at the end of the day?
3. Build Your Own Vegan Community
Try joining a community or making your own! The YouTube community is a great place for vegan inspiration and tips and tricks, or blogs just like this one. Being a vegan can be difficult. We have societal pressures on top of our often busy lifestyles. Some days it can be difficult to put up with people constant questioning your motives. But having someone to stand by your side or a YouTuber that you can watch whenever you feel like giving up, could be the difference between a lifetime vegan and the sixty percent that give up after only six months.
4. Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff
There are a plethora of vegan lifestyles out there. Raw vegan, raw til four, high carb low fat, those that eat honey and those that still wear leather. While these diets can be great, they aren’t something you’ll want to jump straight into.
Start small, making little changes at a time and fixing your mistakes as you go. And it’s okay to make mistakes! Veganism is a journey. You never stop learning. The key to staying vegan is to do what works for you, and keep improving your diet as you learn!
5. Know What You’re Fighting For
In 2014 the Humane Research Council reported that most long term vegans (longer than a year) become vegan for ethical or environmental reasons. Obviously, this isn’t a coincidence.
Veganism is a personal journey, but it’s also something that affects much more than just you. No one wants to see those terrible videos of slaughterhouses or abuse of factory animals, but as vegans (the animal activist side at least) we are standing up and saying no! We will not stand for this, we will not be silent. There are real-life consequences to continuing to eat in an industry that you know is corrupt and immoral and we have to truly understand what we’re fighting for in order to keep our passion for a vegan lifestyle in check.
